Add sales tax to a price, or work backward from a total to the pre-tax price. Pick a state to load its 2026 base rate, then add your local rate for the exact figure.
The formulas
Total = price × (1 + rate). To remove tax from a total: price = total ÷ (1 + rate). Example: $107.25 at 7.25% is $100.00 before tax.
$100 purchase in large states (state rate only)
| State | State rate | Total on $100 |
|---|---|---|
| California | 7.25% | $107.25 |
| Texas | 6.25% | $106.25 |
| New York | 4% | $104.00 |
| Florida | 6% | $106.00 |
| Washington | 6.5% | $106.50 |
| Illinois | 6.25% | $106.25 |
Cities and counties add their own tax on top — combined rates above 9% are common in parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Washington and Alabama. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax.

If you itemize on your federal return, you can deduct either state income tax or sales tax, subject to the SALT cap.
