Frequently asked questions
Is BMI accurate?
BMI is a quick screening tool. It does not measure body fat directly, so very muscular people can score high and older adults can score low. Waist size and other health measures add context.
Can children use this calculator?
No. For ages 2–19, BMI is compared with age- and sex-specific percentiles; ask a pediatrician or use the CDC child BMI tool.
What should I do if my BMI is outside the healthy range?
Talk with a healthcare provider, who can look at your overall health rather than a single number.
